Nestled between the sea and the mountains, you will find Carano, an agricultural village whose name dates back to Roman times. It is renowned for the Sanctuary of Maria SS. Della Libera, a very popular pilgrimage destination. The church, with its single nave, side chapels, and majolica dome, houses a late Byzantine fresco (14th century) and a polychrome wooden statue of the Virgin by Giacomo Colombo on the main altar. The patronal feast in honor of the Madonna della Libera takes place on the first Sunday of May.
Carano seems to have arisen from the ruins of Vescia, as suggested by various historians interested in toponymy along the ancient Appian Way.
